History

Fryeburg, Maine
1820

660 Main Street was built circa 1820 by Dr. Reuel Barrows, one of the founding members of the Fryeburg Temperance Union. The house was built on a granite foundation with the lumber milled on-site; the cellar still contains some of the original hand-hewn supporting beams. Also on site is the property’s original 50′ x 50′ post and beam barn. Generations of families have put their imprint on the house, adding wings and frequently reconfiguring the interior. However, the house’s exterior appearance has mostly remained unchanged since the 1890’s.

Since the turn of the 20the century, the house has been the home and office to several of Fryeburg’s doctors, the most recent being Dr. Dore, father of Fryeburg’s current town librarian. For long-time residents of Fryeburg, Main Street Bed & Breakfast is known as “Dr Dore’s house”.

When the previous owner, Margaret, purchased the house it had been vacant for two years. The house had a solid structure with a well preserved, but dated interior, under at least 7 layers of wallpaper. The property has been as lovingly and faithfully restored as possible. The Reuel Barrows house lives on with its horsehair plaster, pumpkin pine floors, and original fireplaces. We think Dr. Barrows would approve the few changes, especially the new bathrooms.

We love our home and hope that you will too.

Steph & Mike Davis

Stephanie is originally from Binghamton, NY and met Mike at Clarkson University. After graduating, Stephanie continued her education at the University of Bath in England. She is a preservation engineer, which is a structural engineer who works on historic and existing buildings. She is a avid reader and played ice hockey until a few years ago. Stephanie is the main innkeeper, cook and maid.

Mike is from Fryeburg. He finally convinced Stephanie to move from North Reading, MA and the Boston suburbs to Maine to be closer to nature and his family. He is a systems engineer with Raytheon. In his free time he likes to play basketball and is looking forward to re-visiting all of the mountain trails in the area.

Gwen is three and loves to sing, play with dolls and Legos. She may be shy at first but will warm up to you and ask to join you for breakfast.

Jackson is our bulldog pointer mix. He may look fierce at times but loves cuddle. Jackson stays in our private portion of the bed and breakfast and does not enter guest rooms.
